A drive around the Rutherglen Region

 13th July 2025

Today it is freezing, with quite a bit of wind chill with the temperature feeling below 10 C. Firstly we walked into town, which is only about a 10 minute walk, to buy a few things.

We then decided to go for a drive to check out of few of the old wineries we used to visit on a regular basis, starting with Warrabilla which is the furthest out of town. The building hasn't changed much, but the range of wines certainly has. We ended up buying a mixed dozen and ended up getting it shipped home.

Next stop was Bullers, once again an old favourite and I had long been a wine club member getting a regular shipment of their Calliope Shiraz. A taste of the 2019 vintage convinced me to rejoin.

From their we went to All Saints, now an even more commercial enterprise. The tasting area (below) is very flash and there are two restaurants on site We didn't bother to taste as they only had paid tastings on offer, unlike our previous two visits.

Our last winery visit, before lunch, was an old favourite, Pfieffer's. They had various tasting packages, but we were only interested in trying their Liqueur Tokay and Muscat, which is still sensational. We bought a bottle of each and headed back to town

Pfieffer's still looks much the same and still have a big range of wines

On the way home we stopped for a cup of coffee in Rutherglen, got some pies from Parker Pies (still going after all these years), and headed back to the van for lunch.

It is pretty bleak and cold so we didn't do a lot this afternoon, stayed warm and did some reading etc.

Fajitas for dinner cooked in the van, the stove is performing well.
